CIF Connections Masthead

Issue 11: July 2011

The Continuous Improvement Fund held another successful Ontario Recycler Workshop on June 9 in Barrie showcasing the great projects that municipalities have undertaken to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.  Over 140 attendees learned the benefits of providing larger curbside recycling bins, the efficiencies of mid-sized transfer stations and saw the County of Simcoe’s new mobile education unit.  See the full story below to get all the details.

On July 5, the Municipal Industry Program Committee (MIPC) for the blue box decided to recommend to the WDO Board that approximately $6 million in new funding be provided to the CIF for 2012 with direction to spend more funds on MRF rationalization and regionalization projects.  MIPC also recommended continuing the CIF through 2013 with a funding level to be determined next year.

The CIF will determine how these priorities affect the 2011 budget at its next meeting.  In the interim, until direction on how to respond to the MIPC recommendations is provided by the CIF Committee, the CIF is not considering any new applications unless there is approved budget available for the priority area of the project. Please contact us to discuss your pending project application.  CIF staff will contact all municipalities with projects that have not been approved with an update on their applications in September after we clarify how our 2011 budget has been impacted.

Although the funding priorities are changing, each of the CIF partners -- AMO, the City of Toronto, WDO and Stewardship Ontario -- have acknowledged that the CIF is a valuable strategic tool to continue to support municipalities in improving their blue box programs.

I hope all of you have a safe, enjoyable summer and find time to take some much-needed vacation.  The CIF staff also will be taking vacation time so please be patient as we will be operating at reduced staffing levels for the summer.
